Common Core, The Goal Is To Control Your Children

By: Curtis Ophoven 0 Comments   6/13/2014

In an attempt to understand what Common Core is all about and why it is being talked about in the news, I had to do a little research to boil it down.

The problem that Common Core is trying to solve is the same problem that has existed for several decades: American’s public school system is failing when compared to the nations of the world.

The previous president, George W. Bush, tried to address this problem by creating the ‘No Child Left Behind’ plan.  The idea was to require schools to continually pass standard tests in order to determine which schools were “failing” to educate their students so that those schools would make changed to improve.

But it didn’t work because teachers began “teaching to the test” and schools across the country stopped teaching important subject areas because they were not deemed important enough to be tested.  Also, national tests do not account for different school district’s student demographics or lower educated families and cultures.

Common Core

Common Core is the latest federal educational program embraced by the Obama Administration, but rather than just make schools take national tests, it goes a step further to force a national curriculum that the national tests are based on.

But states didn’t want to sign up for another federal educational program. So the Obama Admin coerced states into adopting Common Core by attaching it to the funding given out by the federal 'Race to the Top' program and waivers to get out of the ‘No Child Left Behind’ program.

Because of this, 45 states have adopted some part of Common Core standards in 2010. MN only adopted the English language arts standards, primarily because MN Math standards are already higher than the Common Core standards.

Repealing Common Core

There are many problems with Common Core, like forcing teachers to teach Math and English in completely different ways that don't appear to be beneficial as the previous methods.  Another problem is that local district school boards and the parents behind them no longer control what their children are taught.  This is causing a lot of angry parents to show up at school board meetings across the country.

Last week, two states joined Indiana in repealing the Common Core program.   According to an article on CitizenLink,

“South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley signed a law that will replace the national initiative with state-developed standards and tests by the 2015-16 school year...

"The Palmetto state is the second to block the program. Indiana left the program earlier this year."

"Just last week, a third state joined the list. Oklahoma Gov. Mary Fallin signed a law repealing Common Core. It mandates the State Board of Education to create new, more rigorous standards by August 2016.”

The primary reason that states are beginning to reject Common Core is because “Many education experts say it’s a dangerous path for schools to follow because it leaves parents out of the educational process.”

Oklahoma Gov. Mary Fallin announced her decision to repeal Common Core last Thursday afternoon, stating:

“We are capable of developing our own Oklahoma academic standards that will be better than Common Core. Now is the time for Oklahomans – parents, citizens, educators, employers and elected officials – to unite behind the common goal of improving our schools. …”

“It was originally designed as a state-lead – not federal – initiative that each state could choose to voluntarily adopt."

“Unfortunately, federal overreach has tainted Common Core.  President Obama and Washington bureaucrats have usurped Common Core in an attempt to influence state education standards. The results are predictable. What should have been a bipartisan policy is now widely regarded as the president’s plan to establish federal control of curricula, testing and teaching strategies.”

“We cannot ignore the widespread concern of citizens, parents, educators and legislators who have expressed fear that adopting Common Core gives up local control of Oklahoma’s public schools. …”

T.W. Shannon, coauthor of the bill to repeal Common Core, noted:

“The federal government sold Common Core with the promise of increased standards, but instead gave us an inflexible curriculum that does not equip our children for college,” remarked Shannon. “The federal government has disregarded parental rights, over-regulated teachers, and over-tested our kids. Parents, local governments and teachers are better equipped to meet the needs of their students than the federal government. Parents and teachers are the best leaders for quality education in Oklahoma communities—not bureaucrats in Washington, D.C.”

What About Private Schools?

Ok, so Common Core has some real problems for the public school system, but what about private schools?  Students that are in private schools are not really affected, right?

Well, that was the case for the ‘No Child Left Behind’ federal program, but Common Core goes a step further to change the SAT and AP tests to fit the Common Core curriculum.

That means that no matter which school your children attend: public schools, charter schools, private schools or even if they are homeschooled, they will have to study the Common Core curriculum in order to take these tests.

By controlling the college placement tests, in time, Common Core or the next version of a national educational program could be used to force all schools to adapt its curriculum.

This is how Common Core takes away school choice.  Once this is in place, it’s not hard to imagine the addition of a Common Core ethics standard by which a national morality (teaching what is right/wrong) could be taught to every student in every school.

This would effectively be a state sponsored church which is supposed to be unconstitutional but the constitution has not stopped several other laws.  This would also directly undermine one of the primary ways that Christianity is spread – by parents teaching their children.

Worshipping the State: How Liberalism Became Our State Religion

The age of great deception is upon us. Our leaders have been deceived into believing that they can turn the culture away from Christianity and our nation will remain free and prosperous. They think there is such a thing as a government and culture that is religiously neutral, and by de-Christianizing society they are helping to create a better nation. What they don’t realize is that they are exchanging a Christian culture for a state controlled religion – which will make things much, much worse. This book points to a mountain of facts to prove just that. Christianity is being replaced with the national religion of secular humanism – replacing our trust in God with a government dictatorship.

The Global War on Christians: Dispatches from the Front Lines of Anti-Christian Persecution

This book is about the most dramatic religion story of the early twenty-first century, yet one that most people in the West have little idea is even happening: the global war on Christians. Christians today indisputably are the most persecuted religious body on the planet. The author takes the reader around the world and offers both examples of persecution and why such persecution is taking place. In Matthew 24, Jesus speaks about a very similar time, “… what will be the sign of your coming … you will be handed over to be persecuted and put to death, and you will be hated by all nations”.

The Criminalization of Christianity: Read This Book Before It Becomes Illegal!

There is a war going on for the future of our country. Most people know that. What they may not know is that if Christians lose, the result won’t merely be enduring public policy we disagree with—it will be a prison sentence for those who oppose it. We’ve all seen the attack coming. First the Supreme Court said kids can’t pray in school. Then the Ten Commandments were ripped from the classrooms. Now pastors are being removed from their pulpits and put in jail for speaking out against homosexuality (Sweden). And things are only getting worse. How in the world did we get to this place? And why is it that Christians are singled out in this assault on morality? Serving as a wake-up call for America, this book will expose the truth that Christianity is being criminalized—and that we must stand up against it now.

The Christian Atheist: Believing in God but Living As If He Doesn't Exist

This book is a challenging call to believe what you say you believe. This book challenges Christians to live what they say they believe. Believing the radical way in which Christ forever changes the world is not easy to do and even when you have faith we can quickly forget about the reality of God in our lives. Believing in Christ is not easy, surrounded by darkness and a world that believes every lie under the sun. But we need to shake of the lies, reject them and proclaim the truth every day first in our minds and second in the world.
