What they found was that corruption is the underlying problem and “corruption in Greece originates mainly from a crisis of values, which is linked with both the Greek mentality and the key institutions of the country.”
What corruption has done is caused political leaders to lie about debts and hide money they receive for political favors that keep money flowing to groups that pay them off.
This corruption, which led to their financial collapse, has been discovered to originate with a crisis of values. Another words, Greeks do not believe that telling the truth is a value worthy of using to restrain one’s actions with.
Values like 'telling the truth' are taught to children at a young age and without the “key institutions of the country” – like the schools, churches, government and the media to support values within the culture - they quickly disappear.
But where does the value of telling the truth come from? Where do all moral values come from? They come from the bible, given to us by God. So it looks like the reason the Greek nation is suffering from a major financial collapse is because they have long abandoned Christianity.
Sure there are Christians in Greece and many people that claim to be Christian, but the evidence points out that the nation has abandoned moral standards, which has resulted in massive corruption that cannot be removed without returning to a love for God and his moral standards.
Greece is living proof that without the revelation of God, people cast off restraint and everyone does what is right in their own eyes – which results in financial collapse.
"Where there is no revelation, the people cast off restraint; but blessed is he who keeps the law." – Proverbs 29:18
Bigger Picture
Interestingly enough, Greece is not the only nation in Europe that is experiencing a financial crisis. A few years ago Europe was celebrating its expansion of Atheism and decline of Christianity. They didn’t think they needed God; instead, they could develop their own laws to determine morality. That experiment seems to be ending with a financial crisis, which is causing a social crisis leading to a national crisis.
So if this is true, that Christianity holds a nation together and without the revelation of God, nations cannot avoid ruin, then what happens when all the nations turn from God? Global financial collapse?
2 Thessalonians 2 tells us about this very thing as we approach the coming of Jesus Christ.
“Concerning the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ …. Don’t let anyone deceive you in any way, for that day will not come until the rebellion occurs and the man of lawlessness is revealed, … “
First a rebellion will occur and then the man of lawlessness comes to power. What is the rebellion?
Jesus gives us some more information about this in Matt 24:4-12:
'Jesus answered: “Watch out that no one deceives you. … At that time many will turn away from the faith and will betray and hate each other, and many false prophets will appear and deceive many people. Because of the increase of wickedness, the love of most will grow cold,'"
At some point in history, just before the second coming of Christ, there will be a massive turning away from the faith and an increase of wickedness. Sounds a lot like what we have seen in Europe.
In the same account of Matt 24, Luke adds;
“On the earth, nations will be in anguish and perplexity” – Luke 21:25
In summary, the financial collapse of Greece has been traced to their decline in revelation and it is likely to be the same cause of the financial crisis throughout Europe. The decline of revelation in America it also likely to be the reason for the global financial crisis beginning in 2008 which has causing the nations of the world to be in anguish and perplexity.
The reason the nations of the world are in perplexity is because no matter what laws they pass or actions they take, the financial crisis continues and the only way to turn it around is to turn back to a love for God – which no nation is doing – because they are ignorant of sin - and unaware that man cannot prosper apart from God.
