How Secular Schools Lead Children Away From Christ

Deciding which school to put your children in is not easy today.  Many parents don’t have a lot of good choices.  If your children are in a secular school, you should know what they are learning so that you know how to re-educate them when they get home.  

The advantage of a Christian school (private or homeschool) is that children begin with the truth.  The full account of the reality of the world that we live in, both material and spiritual.  Beginning with how the world was originally created to how sin and death entered the world and then how Jesus entering into human history and became the solution.  

With this foundation, all questions can be asked and answered.  Without this foundation, a secular education cannot even begin to answer the many questions children have.  A secular education can only cover a very limited set of knowledge, leaving students unsatisfied and unable to find a place in the world that is worthy of their dedication.  This is because a secular education has no basis for a purpose to life, and no reason for discipline or forgiveness, grace or mercy.  

Without purpose, the secular education cannot answer basic questions like 'Why forgive someone?' or 'Why work diligently?' or 'Why seek to gain knowledge?'.  The many problems in the secular schools today are symptoms of these unanswered questions that they have no answers for.  This is why a secular education is inadequate and inferior to a Christian education.  

“Neutral” Place 

Secular schools pretends to be a “neutral” place that does not teach religion, but in reality they teach religion in every class.  This verse tells us that it is impossible to be neutral.   

"You are either for me or against me." - Matthew 12:30

Either you believe in God or you'll believe in something against him.  Secular humanism is actually a religion, and it is the only religion that is allowed to be taught in the secular school system today by default because all other religions have been banned.   

Rather than a neutral place, secular schools actively suppress the truth by teaching children to deny Christianity as the truth and instead believe in the religion of secular humanism.   

Here is a quote from the Humanist Manifesto, published in 1973, which states:

“We find insufficient evidence for belief in the existence of a supernatural; it is either meaningless or irrelevant to the question of the survival and fulfillment of the human race. As non-theists, we begin with humans not God, nature not deity.”

This is a direct contradiction to scripture that says;

“And without faith it is impossible to please God, because anyone who comes to Him must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who earnestly seek Him.” – Hebrews 11:6 

7 School Subjects Used To Lead Children Away From Christ

1. Reading – Spoken language is the most powerful tool we have to gain and teach knowledge. The universe began with the Lord speaking it into existence.  Words are powerful and they contain very important information that is needed for our survival.  (“Man shall not live on beard alone, but on every Word that comes from the mouth of God” – Matt 4:4).  The wrong words taught to children are dangerous, which is why we need to guard what they are taught.  (“guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it”- Proverbs 4:32).  This is why many nations use the bible as one of the very first books to teach children to read from.  But this is not what children learn from in many secular schools.  They begin with the assumption that words are not powerful and they do not attach to the heart or mind of the students reading them.  They are just words on a page. Ignoring the warnings, their books are covered with foolishness that students are forever molded by.  Based on the false assumption that words do not contain meaning that have the power to mold the mind, secular school feed children foolishness without even realizing the damage they are doing. This is directly against the teaching of the Bible that is full of warnings about words, (“Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen.” – Ephesians 4:29)

2. Writing – The written language is the most powerful tool we have to remember what happen in the past and teach it to the next generation.  The most important thing to remember and teach to the next generation is what God has done when he supernaturally entered into human history and forever changed the course of humanity.  Learning to write about what God has done teaches children how valuable they are and how important the plans that God has for them are.  Journalism is how this knowledge was recorded and passed down through the generations.  The Lord’s disciples were the first journalists.  The gospel of Luke begins with how he thoroughly investigated every testimony so that his account of Jesus was accurate.  “…myself have carefully investigated everything from the beginning, I too decided to write an orderly account for you” - Luke 1:2.  But this is not what children learn to write about in secular schools.  Instead they study writers of far less importance and learn to copy their ideas.  Most of the writers are humanist who deny the supernatural and focus merely on the material world.  But the supernatural is too obvious to ignore and the children are too smart to hide it from them. So they bring in writers that make the supernatural fun and exciting, while teaching moral relativism and portending God does not exist.  (like Harry Potter books)

3. Math – The Lord created the world and everything in it in an orderly process with laws that government the universe and his design blueprint is everywhere even in each living thing (DNA).  God is the origin of mathematics.  He is the reason that 2 + 2 = 4.  The origin of mathematics gives us an explanation of God's purpose in creating us.  Students that study mathematic are studying the fingerprints of God.  But this is not what children learn in many secular schools.  They learn that man invented mathematics as a way to make sense of the world in which we live in.  Along with that assumption, children are taught that universe came into existence without a cause and therefore without purpose or meaning. This is directly against the teaching of the Bible, from the creation account in Genesis to God's direct involvement in history to his stated purpose for each individual person.

4. Science – Science is the study of evidence in order to find an original cause.  The Lord created the world and everything in it in an orderly process with laws that government the universe and his design patterns can be seen in everything.  Science is really a study of what God has created. Students that study science with this education have an advantage in that they know what they are looking for, design patterns of the Creator. But this is not what children learn in many secular schools.  They are taught that science is the study of how things work or function in a purely material world - as if the cause of their function is only for survival.  The secular science teacher cannot consider any other cause of design and the students are limited to a study only small part of the reality.  The students miss out on the study of sciences for the reasons of beauty and eloquence that only an intelligent designer could have weaved together. 

5. Music/Arts – Music and art are reflections of our Creator. From the beginning of history, music was used to worship God.  Jesus even said if we don’t cry out and declare who He is, the rocks will cry out. (Luke 19:40). Before humanity was created, the Lord had a large orchestra of angles that were created with great musical gifts.  In fact, Satan was the worship leader in heaven before he fell, as noted in Ezekiel 28:13.  This is just the beginning of the real history of music. But this is not what children are taught today in secular schools.  The further you move away from the true history of music/art, the further you move away from the purpose of music/art.  When they teach music/art, they never point out how the quality and depth of meaning decreases in societies that move away from God. Today’s Art work has little meaning, because secularism have no foundation for meaning or purpose. 

6. History – The book that describes the earliest historical account of the world is the Bible. The bible describes the beginning of history, along with early history and includes many details about the nations of the world that will come and go.  The history of many nations descripted in the Bible in books like Daniel, Ezekiel and Revelations are still unfolding.  God is involved in the entire history.  Dr. Francis Schaeffer has an excellent video series discussing the history from the Roman Age to the Modern Age that is called “How Should We Then Live”.  The history of America is also very important, to study the real reasons behind how America became the greatest nation in the history of the world.  A few years ago, Krik Cameron produced the movie “Monumental” that tells how God was the foundation of America.  And last year Dinesh D’Souza produced the book and movie “America: Imaging a World without Her”, which explains how America has overcome many of the greatest challenges in the world. But this is not what children learn in many secular schools today.  Instead their history books have been stripped of the influence of God from first civilization to the last.  Students today have no idea what the real history is.  They have no idea that God has been involved from the very beginning and every nation since then. Today’s students are taught false history, censored from the truth. 

7. Psychology/Philosophy – The best explanation of the “soul” and the "conscious" of man and how we relate to the world is found in the Bible. But the secular schools teach students a set of assumptions that are based on a limited world of naturalism.  A secular way of thinking (Psychology and Philosophy) starts with the assumption that the “soul” is part of the mind which is only part of our material body.  This assumption has several implications, first that we don’t have an eternal soul that lives after our body dies, second that we cannot think about supernatural things like God or be influenced by Him and third that we are not supernatural.  This is contrary to reality.  The bible has evidence of our "soul" and explains to us that we have an eternal soul and our minds is capable of thinking about spiritual things ("Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things." – Colossians 3:2) and that the supernatural is very real.  The bible also tells us that the Lord knows what we are thinking.  ("You know when I sit down and when I rise up; You understand my thought from afar." King David, Psalm 139:2).  Here are two videos that explain just how much greater the biblical view of Psychology and Philosophy are. Secular schools teach students to limit their thinking to material things, while Christianity teaches that we ought to think about that material and the spiritual world. “Come now let us reason together” – Isaiah 1:18, “whatever is true, think about these things” – Philippians 4:8, “Be prepared to give a reason for your hope” – 1 Peter 3:15.

As you can see, secular schools are not teaching children a neutral position on religion.  In fact, it is impossible to teach anything without teaching your assumptions about God.  When they try to remove God, they have to hide the truth about reality from the students and in the process they remove the purpose of life.  Children that are given an secular education are at a major disadvantage and many spend much of their life trying to unlearn what they were taught. 

This is how secular schools lead children away from Christ, even when their parents are Christians. The schools have the advantage of teaching 40 hours a week vs. the parents 5-10 hours a week.

Wow I didn't realize how much they could teach my children against Jesus. I should pull my children out of the public schools.
