If You Leave Christ Where Will You Go? Only He Has The Words Of Life

Young adults are leaving the church at record numbers, so they say.  Some say the church needs to continue to back away from its own doctrines.

But if you quit believing in Jesus, who is the only living God, where will you go and who else will you put your faith in?

Jesus asked this very question after preaching in John 6:47-51.

“47 Very truly I tell you, the one who believes has eternal life. 48 I am the bread of life.”

“49 Your ancestors ate the manna in the wilderness, yet they died. 50 But here is the bread that comes down from heaven, which anyone may eat and not die. 51 I am the living bread that came down from heaven. Whoever eats this bread will live forever. This bread is my flesh, which I will give for the life of the world.”” – John 6:47-51

They did not understand this message because it required spiritual discernment and it resulted in many to stop follow him.  Jesus than asked his disciples, “Are you also going to stop following me?”

Simon Peter replied, “Where shall we go, for only you have the words of eternal life?”

What was so difficult to understand, was the He is the bread of life.

“The words I have spoken to you—they are full of the Spirit and life.” – John 8:63

Jesus has talking about two kinds of life, our physical life and our spiritual life. Manna was able to sustain their ancestors for a short time, but yet they died spiritually because they did not believe in Christ.

Christ is the bread that came from heaven that we need to sustain us from spiritual death.  He is the living bread that will live forever. His physical body was given for the life of the world.

After he spoke these things, many of his disciples turned back and no longer followed him.

“66 From this time many of his disciples turned back and no longer followed him.”

Notice that not just some of the people in the crowd stopped following him, but many of his disciples no longer followed him. And Jesus didn’t even try to explain what he was saying to them or try to stop those that turned back to their lives and stopped following him. Instead he turned to his twelve disciples and asked them;

67 “You do not want to leave too, do you?” Jesus asked the Twelve.

68 Simon Peter answered him, “Where shall we go, for only you have the words of eternal life? 69 We believe and know that you are the Holy One of God.”

Nothing Else To Believe In

This story rings true today just the same. Author and Speaker, Ravi Zacharias in his book “Has Christianity Failed You” says;

“When belief in God becomes difficult, the tendency is to turn away from him – but, in heaven’s name, to what?”  - page 144

“The message of Jesus goes beyond mere religion or belief and dramatically alters our way of thinking and being. He challenges all of humanity to taste and see that he is good and to take to heart the truth that his word abides forever.” – page 18

A few verses later in the passage where Jesus asked his disciples if they were going to leave, he says;

Yet there are some of you who do not believe.” He went on to say, “This is why I told you that no one can come to me unless the Father has enabled them.”  John 6:54-55

Jesus knew that many in the crowd did not believe in him and he knew that those that did would be enabled by the Father to continue to believe in him even if they did not understand what he was saying.

In the same way, we should not try to use cunning words to attract a crowd of unbelievers (2 Cor 4:2). We should preach the Word of God as strong as we can and trust that the Lord will enable them to remain faithful, just as Jesus did.

For there is nothing else to believe it.  There is no one else that has a message of hope, no one else that can save us from our own nature and therefore no one else worthy to put our faith in.

The reality of God is undeniable, as revealed by creation in order that all people must choose to put their faith in someone.  Yet no one else is capable of fulfilling any promise they make to us or any good intension they claim for us. Hope in anyone else is completely insecure.

Guaranteed To Be Good

If we leave Christ, we will put our faith is someone else and that someone else will let us down. "Do not put your trust in princes, in mortal men, who cannot save." (Psalm 146:3)

But if we remain faithful to Christ, it is true that we have no idea what will happen in our life – but it is guaranteed to be good (to be highly valued in God's eyes) and our inheritance and eternal life are already secured no matter how our life ends.  (1 Peter 1:3-5)

Sometimes people turn away from God because he is God, because God does things that we do not expect or that were not part of our plan.

For example, John the Baptist was in prison when he was disappointed because Jesus had not set him free and had not taken over and established his kingdom on earth when he sent a message to Jesus asking him “are you not the Messiah, the one we have been looking for?”

Jesus responded saying that he hopes no one will stop trusting in him because of who he is.  What this means is that history must unfold just as God foretold it because he is God and his Word is true.

When God does things that we do not understand it is not a reason to turn from Him but all the more reason to turn to Him, to learn more about what He is doing.  And he gave us his entire plan for how history will unfold. All we need to do is study it and we can understand what he is doing.

He has a good plan for each one of us, to bless us and prosper us. If you leave him you will miss out on what he has planned.

God Is Great, God Is Good: Why Believing in God Is Reasonable and Responsible

This book answers the contemporary complaints against belief in God which are addressed with intellectual passion and rigor by some of the most astute theological and philosophical minds in alive today. Atheism is no longer simply about `not believing' in a God or an intelligent designer. They have become angry and intolerant at anyone that believes in God. The evidence of creation and the daily worship of those that love God is a constant grind on the soul of those that reject the reality of God. Just as the scripture tells us, there is no rest for the soul of man that rejects God. Yet Christianity contains all the answers and reveals that God is indeed Good and Great are his works.

Crazy Love: Overwhelmed by a Relentless God

This book is “written for those who want more Jesus. It is for those who are bored with what American Christianity offers. It is for those who don't want to plateau, who would rather die before their convictions do." It is a book that is meant to change the way Christians live their lives. The first theme is that we must painstakingly examine ourselves. To put it plainly, churchgoers who are `lukewarm' are not Christians. The second theme is deeply counter-cultural. Chan argues that the Christians, who believe in the works of Jesus, would not be pursuing material wealth but would be focused on telling others about Christ.

The Unshakable Truth: How You Can Experience the 12 Essentials of a Relevant Faith

This is a very insightful, Bible-centered, and well researched book that covers 12 foundational Christian beliefs. This is an excellent book for anyone questioning the Christian faith or anyone wanted to strengthen their faith or defend their faith. Nothing can be more worthy to study, then to study why the foundation of Christianity has stood the test of time, while remaining the only religion that is open to criticism. Scripture even invites us to prove otherwise if that were possible. Unlike all other religions that are protected by theocratic rulers and persecuted control of investigating their documents, Christianity has only been proven to be correct by anyone that has done the research and looked at the mountain of evidence. Take a look and see for yourself why the story of Christ is completely accurate.

What’s So Great About Christianity

This book is a response to the culture and media that continues to lie about Christianity. This is a passionate and intellectual presentation of the strengths and historical truths of Christianity. No other religion has brought the world greater rewards than Christianity, because no other religion contains a greater love given to the world by its creator. Without the unquestionable result Christianity, the world would not have been able to sustain itself and would have already been overtaken by death. We live in a time when atheism is attacking Christianity. This book reminds us that Christianity sustains the world.
