Regarding this country's values, Dr. Alex McFarland has both a vision and plan of action.
His vision: to restore Christian principles to the U.S.A. by 2026. Plan of action: Project 2026. Christian Post's Brittany Smith reported on the details of Project 2026.
McFarland is an author on apologetics. (See his books here) His initiative was birthed after he studied other cultural movements in this country. He told The Christian Post that many social movements (i.e. the homosexual agenda or spread of Islam) have taken 15 to 20 years to come to fruition and greatly impact culture.
McFarland decided that he could take action to reverse these ungodly cultural trends. He began studying the history of revivals. He concluded that many revivals required at least a decade of church work before a large-scale revival was seen.
Thus began the 15-year plan in Project 2026. In short, McFarland hopes Project 2026 will engage Christians and churches to pray and work jointly to change opposing cultural trends. McFarland is hoping to enroll the ranks of 100,000 churches across the country. He says there's lots of interest.
"I meet hundreds of people that say we need a spiritual awakening in our country and we need Christianity to be restored in America," McFarland said.
Interestingly, 2026 lands on the 250th anniversary of the U.S.A. McFarland's project includes six core beliefs: traditional family (a monogamous marriage between a man and woman), God, life, morality, prayer/worship and American exclusivism. (American exclusivism, according to Samuel Goldman of Postmodern Conservative, is the idea that the U.S.A. represents and defends the only significant and supreme values.)
McFarland plans to build a coalition during 2012 and produce resources for churches and young adults in 2013 and 2014.
McFarland is specifically targeting the younger population because they will represent Christianity in the workforce in years to come.
"We need to assert ourselves as leaders in various engines of the culture," McFarland tells young people. "As a Christian assume your role in journalism, medicine, science, and take your Christianity with you."
McFarland hopes to create a small-group study resource that would involve the youth, parents and grandparents in this country. He plans to spread the word about Project 2026 by writing, appearing on radio programs, and hosting conferences. McFarland's first Project 2026 Conference is set for Sept. 27-29 at North Greenville University in Greenville, South Carolina.
A released statement by McFarland in the Christian Post article said, "Christianity has been an integral part of America, and it must remain so if America is to thrive in the future. America’s founders recognized absolute moral truths, calling them ‘self-evident.’ Our culture must recover the knowledge that morality is based not on changing human social conventions, but is tied to the unchanging character of God."
