Should Christians Stay Away from Yoga Because of its Demonic Roots?

By: Sonia Eizenhoefer 1 Comments   7/29/2013

Some Christians may have ignorantly tried Yoga not knowing about its roots or possible danger. Many things in this culture should be resisted including Yoga and I will explain why.

Yoga is defined as yoked with. It is stated in the Webster online dictionary: The origin of Yoga- Sanskrit, literally, yoking, from Yunaxtihe yokes; akin to Latin jungere to join.

As Christians we shouldn’t be yoked with anything accept the Lord Jesus Christ as it says in Mathew 11:29-30 "Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For My yoke is easy and My burden is light (NKJ)."

Most people go to Yoga in order to feel better, but we only need to seek God’s peace and rest for that and that can be found in a relationship with Christ. So if His people are not finding peace and rest we need to seek the Lord and find out why. He will show us if we ask Him, which would be better to do rather than being lured away by something like Yoga.

Definition found on Webster’s website is:

  1. A Hindu philosophy teaching the suppression of all activity of body, mind, and will in order that the self may realize its distinction from them and attain liberation
  2. A system of exercises for attaining bodily or mental control and well-being

Definition found on Bing’s website is:

  1. Hindu discipline that promotes spiritual with a supreme being through a system of postures and rituals
  2. System of exercise or set of breathing exercises and postures derived from or based on Hindu Yoga

Therefore if Yoga is a Hindu discipline and came from the Hindu religion we need to know what Hinduism is all about. Hindus believe that no religion teaches the only way to salvation above all others, but that all genuine paths are facets of God's Light, deserving tolerance and understanding. This belief goes against God’s word, as it says in, John 14:6 Jesus said to him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man comes to the Father, but by me(NKJ). Jesus Christ is the only way to the Father and no one else is.

Mark Driscoll talks about the dangers of Yoga on You-tube:

Yoga is Hinduism. That there is a spark of divinity within you its pantheism… that there is not creator and creation all is collapsed into what we call oneism and the result is you don’t go out to God, you go into self and it’s not about connecting to God through the meateratorship of Jesus it’s about connecting to the universe through meditation. It’s absolute Paganism. We don’t go in to ourselves we go out to Jesus. We’re not trying to be one with creation we’re trying to be reconciled to the Father through the son by the Spirit. Yoga and mediation and Easternism are all opening to demonism.

Why would one want to connect to the universe when they can know the creator of it?  Driscoll also says the postures and positions of Yoga place you in a position of submission like an act of worship-you’re offering up your body. The question is to what?  He also states that signing up for a Yoga class is like signing up for a demon class. Demons are liars, tricksters, deceivers, and enslavers. Isn’t the battle we’re in as Christians enough, why add more by being involved in this?

With this knowledge one should pray and ask God for wisdom about this. For a Christian to continue going to a Yoga class after learning this they could be opening themselves up to the demonic realm.

As Christians we need to be good examples for others. It’s our responsibility to become more Christ like on a daily basis. Weather we are aware of it or not, people are watching us. If we are Disciples of Christ, we need to follow His lead. Some Christians may try and get away with more than others, but this isn’t a good attitude to have. Why do Christians try and get away with doing such things and call it legalistic when they are told it’s clearly wrong?

Maybe this stems from being immature in the Lord. We need to try and please the Lord who is our King. He commands for us to obey Him, our obedience to him reveals our love. So our disobedience could be revealing a rebellious attitude. In John 14 15-17 this is clearly stated: "If you love Me, keep My commandments. 16 and I will pray to the Father, and He will give you another Helper, that He may abide with you forever- 17 the spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees Him nor knows Him; but you know Him, for He dwells with you and will be in you. "

Notice the spirit of truth that the Lord gives us can’t be received by the world simply because they don’t know Him. We know Him and should want to please Him because we love Him.

Stretching And Meditating

Personally I like to stretch and do so all of the time. Whenever I’m sore during the day I’ll stretch that muscle. For example while sitting at my desk for a long period of time, I’ll stretch my arms and hands or on long commute driving, I’ll stretch my shoulders and back. I also stretch before or after a workout. Stretching is healthy and necessary for us to remain flexible.

Meditation on the bible is alright to do and encouraged in Psalm 1:1-2 "Blessed is the man who walks not in the counsel of the ungodly, Nor stands in the path of sinners, But his delight is on the law of the Lord, and in His law he meditates day and night." Can you imagine what the world would be like if Christians not only read the bible but meditated on His Word/laws day and night?

Meditation is to reflect; to moan, to mutter; to ponder; to make a quiet sound such as sighing; to meditate or contemplate something as one repeats the words. It is important to clear up any confusion about the word “meditate,” the Bible is not teaching on Eastern mystical, occult, or “mind science” kind of meditation in which a person simply empties his or her mind of all thoughts or chants a meaningless word or syllable. In this false kind of meditation, the person opens himself or herself to outside forces and does not concentrate on the true God or His Word.

This is not what the Bible is talking about; rather, the word meditate represents the total focusing of a person’s mind and spirit on the true God and His word. In Hebrew thought, to meditate on the scriptures is to quietly repeat them while utterly abandoning outside distractions (NKJ Spirit Life Bible for Students).

In conclusion, even though yoga may be popular and seem harmless enough we do not need to practice such things if we are Christians. My prayer for all who read this article is for each one to want to make Jesus Christ King over their lives and follow Him more fully so they can be great examples to other believers.

I'm going to go out on a limb here and say that 99% of people I've met in yoga classes are doing yoga as a cool down or warm up from their other workouts... They are STRETCHING THEIR MUSCLES not yolking themselves with something that doesn't even exist. You'll see the devil in a bar of soap if you wanted to.

Satan Is Alive And Well On Planet Earth

No one thinks much about the Devil anymore. In fact, words like witchcraft and black magic have a strangely medieval ring to our ears. Many people even think of Satan as somehow comic -- and therefore harmless. Yet amidst the tragedy and corruption of our own century, it is ironic that many people doubt whether an active, evil force really exists.

The Truth War

Truth is under attack, and much is at stake. Christians are caught in the crossfire of alternative Christian histories, emerging faulty texts, and a cultural push to eliminate absolute Truth altogether. In this amazing new book, MacArthur reclaims the unwavering certainty of God's Truth and anchors Christians in the eternal, immovable promises that are found in His Word.

Postmodern Times

Just what is postmodernism? The average person would be shocked by its creed: Truth, meaning, and individual identity do not exist. Human life has no special significance, no more value than animal or plant life. This curse has spread across Europe and is now being taught in America, but it couldn't be farther from the truth. Christ is the foundation of life and has a plan and for each person.

The New Tolerance

How a Cultural Movement Threatens to Destroy You, Your Faith, and Your Children. Today's definition of tolerance states that a person's behavior, beliefs and attitudes are inseparable from who he or she is. Therefore, any attack on behaviors, beliefs or attitudes is seen as a personal attack. Furthermore, it especially targets Christians because Christians believe that their truth claim -- Jesus Christ is Lord and Savior -- is in fact superior to any other truth claims.
