‘The Response’ Was No Ordinary Prayer Meeting

By: Curtis Ophoven 0 Comments   8/8/2011

"We need another Dunkirk," said Dr. James Dobson at Saturday's national day of prayer in Houston as he recounted the famous story and called American Christians to devote themselves to prayer and fasting because "God answers prayer."

Joel Rosenberg, who attended the event, posted an article on his website explains the story behind “the miracle at Dunkirk” that Dr.James Dobson referred to.

“The year was 1940. The moment was one of the darkest in the history of the English people. More than 300,000 British troops suddenly found themselves pinned down in northern France. Nazi forces were bearing down on them.

The Brits didn't have enough ammunition or supplies. At any moment, Hitler's forces would launch a ferocious attack. The Brits faced imminent annihilation. Prime Minister Winston Churchill and his advisors thought at bestthe navy could rescue 20,000 to 30,000 before it was too late. Others feared even that might not be possible. And the stakes couldn't have been higher. If so many forces were wiped out, Hitler and the Nazis would invade the British Isles -- and win.

So the King of England called for a national day of prayer. That Sunday, an estimated 70 percent of the British people showed up at churches all over the country. They begged for the Lord's mercy on their fathers and sons, and for their national survival. And the Lord heard those heart felt prayers and responded with what became known as "the miracle at Dunkirk." Hitler inexplicably delayed giving his generals the order to finish off the Brits.

A great storm over Germany prevented Nazi planes from being able to take off. The British people quickly assembled some 900 fishing boats, yachts, trawlers, andother private and government vessels, and began ferrying the troops of the French beaches and back to England a few at a time. By the grace of God, nearly a third of a million souls were saved as a result, as was the British nation. “

The Response attracted more than 30,000 Americans peaceably yesterday to pray for the Lord to have mercy on our country. They joined together with evangelical Christians gathered at some 1,300 satellite viewing locations in all 50 states.

Several months ago, Texas Governor Rick Perry started organizing “The Response” calling the nation to repent and pray, and to encourage people from all over the country to participate.

It took a lot of prayers just to get this event to happen. Gov. Rick Perry stood his ground against intense liberal and atheist opposition and even a federal lawsuit, which was later dropped.  All the more evidence that the hatred for Christ is working hard to destroy our nation and stop us from calling on God for intervention.  Yet, the living God is the only one capable of solving our nations problems.

“Lord, You are the source of every good thing, You are our only hope. And we stand before You today in awe of your power, and in gratitude for Your blessings; in humility for our sins.

Father, our heart breaks for America. We see discord at home. We see fear in the market place. We see anger in the halls of government. And as a nation we have forgotten Who made us, Who protects us, Who blesses us, and for that we cry out for Your forgiveness.” – Gov. Rick Perry

The Response was based on Joel chapter two, in which an ancient Hebrew prophet speaks to a nation in crisis and gives God’s solution:

  1. gather together,
  2. repent of their sins,
  3. and pray to God to intervene ontheir behalf.

In that day the command was for everyone to stop what they were doing and gather for a sacred assembly to turn to God with all their hearts, "with fasting, with weeping, and with mourning" (Joel 2:12).

This event was truly a historical moment, perhaps a turning point in our nation’s history. The staggering number of participants across the country reveals what the liberal media tries so hard to hide - that America is still a Christian nation.

How Christianity Made the Modern World

The books shows how through century after century, Bible-believing Christians put their faith into action to help those who were unable to help themselves. In an age where Christians are often marginalized and where secular reporters with their warped anti-Christ agenda decry much of what our forefather did or even deny the West's Christian heritage, then this book is refreshing, life-giving and invigorating rain from heaven, soaked in facts, history, testimony and personal observation in country after country and place after place. Christianity is truly responsible for the success of the modern world.

The Reason for God: Belief in an Age of Skepticism

In this apologia for Christian faith, Keller mines material from literary classics, philosophy, anthropology and a multitude of other disciplines to make an intellectually compelling case for God. Written for skeptics and the believers who love them, the book draws on the author's encounters as founding pastor of New York's booming Redeemer Presbyterian Church. One of Keller's most provocative arguments is that all doubts, however skeptical and cynical they may seem, are really a set of alternate beliefs.

Radical: Taking Back Your Faith from the American Dream

David Platt reflects a wider move of God through which He is stirring His people to live radically for Him to finish discipline all nations (Mt. 24:14 and Mt 28:18-20). Platt urges us to discover Jesus as our sole treasure, to lay aside everything that keeps us from pursuing Him above all else, and to realize that "It's Not About Me." This is the complete opposite message that the world is telling us, that we are the center of the universe and we should live for our personal desires and ambitions without a care in the world for anyone else. The maturity of evil is complete selfishness, while the maturity of righteousness is complete abandonment of selfishness. The harvest is ready.

Persecution: How Liberals Are Waging War Against Christianity

This gripping expose of liberalism will startle you. The number of Christians being sued or mistreated continues to increase. This book is chock full of true stories to make us realize just how damaging a "politically correct" society can be to Judeo-Christian values. From the schools to the high courts, you'll be outraged by the treatment of Christians in this allegedly free society. Beyond a shadow of a doubt there are a growing number of people within our country that truly hate Christians and will do everything they can to remove Christian influence and the freedom to worship God.
