Why Few Churches Are Preaching On The End Times

By: Curtis Ophoven 0 Comments   2/20/2015

There are many reasons why few churches are teaching on the end times today even as we get closer and closer to the Lord’s return.

The first is that the Lord predicted few would be teaching his return because many will not be expecting him when he comes.

In Matthew 24:43 Jesus tells us that he will come like a thief in the night.

The world will not be thinking about him when he comes. They will have their minds set on other things.  The popular way of thinking today is called postmodernism.   Postmodernism has taken captive the way we think.  It is the school of thought that proclaims 'there are no truths’ and ‘no one can come to know the truth’.

When the culture of a nation begins to believe this, they cannot tolerate their preachers to teach the opposite - that Truth does exist.  Giving up the truth is very costly.  It cuts off the need to look for truth in the Word of God.  If we cannot know the truth, then there is no reason to try to understand what the Lord is doing from what he said.

This way of thinking started when our education system was taken over by unbelievers, and after a few decades of teaching that truth does not exist, it is nearly impossible to teach that is does.

So the churches have come to partially accept what the culture believes, that truth is mostly unknowable.   The natural logic that follows this assumption tells us that there is no reward for looking for answers about the future since it is mostly unknowable.  And so fewer and fewer bible studies are found in churches today.  Yet the Lord wants us to study his plans and to understand what he is doing because he gave us so many details about how the future would unfold.

Another consequence is that once the church gives up its love for the truth it gives up its passion for salvation (2 Thess 2:10).  If you don't believe you know the truth their is no reason to share it or defend it. The church has become more influences by the culture than the culture has become influences by the church.

With little interest in truth, churches focus on teaching faith.  But faith without truth is blind faith.  This is what the Atheists see today when they look at the church.  They see faith in faith itself, rather then faith in the truth because of the  evidence we have in the bible.  Truth is essential, it can't be discarded.

Although the churches hold on to faith, many have lost interest in seeking the truth. This is why most churches today are not studying the prophecies that have the answers to what is going on in the world today and in the future.  And without answers, the church is like a blind man leading people in the dark, unable to be confidence in what is going on or what is coming in the future.

Mocking the Lord’s return

Peter tells us that in the end times the culture will be mocking the return of the Lord’s.

"Above all, you must understand that in the last days scoffers will come, scoffing and following their own evil desires. They will say, “Where is this ‘coming’ he promised? Ever since our ancestors died, everything goes on as it has since the beginning of creation" – 2 Peter 3:3-4

The churches may be shying away from teaching on the end times, but they will not completely abandon hope.  They still preach Christ and his return some day, without trying to understand the details of the events leading up to his return.  But by doing so they are giving up a lot of ground and are saying only this part of the bible is truth, not all the details about how the nations of the world will unfold as we approach his return.

The Lord is In The Details

The details are very important because they are how we come to know more about Christ.  If we do not study and teach about them, we are saying that we do not believe that we can understand Christ's plan to reveal himself to the world.

If God didn’t want us to study the events leading up to his return, then he would not have given us so many prophecies to look at.  There are literally hundreds of prophecies that have not yet come about.  Revelations 19:10 tells us “For the essence of prophecy is to give a clear witness for Jesus.”

The ability to predict the future in detail is proof that Jesus is Lord.  No other book in the world contains detailed prophecies of the future.  This is why the essence of prophecy is a clear witness for Jesus.  When we invest time and energy in the details about his plans for the future, we become witnesses for him.

A Cry for Justice: Overcome anger, reject bitterness, and trust in Jesus who will fight for you

Anyone that has been through difficult times, this book is for you. Our demand for justice is a demand for a loving God. Shelley’s pain was so severe that she refused to believe in God and tried to end her life several times before God used a small group of believers to intervene in her life and show that God does exist. This is really an amazing story. Shelley's testimony is a powerful and relatable to anyone who has ever experienced pain or disappointment in their lives. She is refreshingly honest about her journey and tackles difficult questions about suffering. The book leaves you understanding the power and love of Jesus in a way that fills you with hope.

Persecution: How Liberals Are Waging War Against Christianity

This gripping expose of liberalism will startle you. The number of Christians being sued or mistreated continues to increase. This book is chock full of true stories to make us realize just how damaging a "politically correct" society can be to Judeo-Christian values. From the schools to the high courts, you'll be outraged by the treatment of Christians in this allegedly free society. Beyond a shadow of a doubt there are a growing number of people within our country that truly hate Christians and will do everything they can to remove Christian influence and the freedom to worship God.

Losing Our Virtue: Why the Church Must Recover Its Moral Vision

All is not lost. The culture can be won and postmodernism can be discredited because this generation is desperately hungry for the truth. The question is will the Church rise up and seek after the knowledge of Christ and then trade a life of lugury for a life of giving life to the generation that is literally being destroyed without it. In this book, David has a stinging assault on the idolatrous nature of postmodern man. Chock full of astute observations about the utter lack of morality within American popular culture and the creeping destruction of Christianity caused by compromises with that culture, this book is a clarion call to intelligent people who understand that only through the death of self and utter submission to the God of the Christian Bible can the we hold out hope for the future.

Still the Best Hope: Why the World Needs American Values to Triumph

In this extraordinary book, Dennis Prager, argues that the global social and political crisis of the 21st century is really an intellectual crisis. That is, a battle of ideas between American values and their alternatives. That is the reality of Christ vs. all other ideas. The knowledge of God is an intellectual substance and sharing it with other people is what changes the world. This book counters what college students are learning today in their Marist classes. America is the greatest nation in the world with the greatest ideas in the world.
