"give thanks in all circumstances, for this is God's will for you in Christ Jesus."  1 Thessalonians 5:18

Today, with Thanksgiving just days away, I want to break this scripture down for you.

Give thanks - I believe it is important to give thanks.  What that means, is to verbalize your thankfulness, to express it to those to whom you are thankful. It is not enough just to be thankful.

We need to give thanks!  You can be thankful and never express it to anyone.  What good is that.  I know, God knows that you are thankful, but I believe God specifically tells us to give thanks, so that we can be a blessing to someone else.  And we should be generous with giving thanks.

We should not give just the minimum requirement, but we should overflow in our giving of thanks.  You can't really give too much thanks, can you?  Oh I suppose you can start to get obnoxious if you try to give overflowing thanks to one person.  So, spread it around!  There are a lot of people you probably need to express your thanks to.  So go on give generously!  You won't ever go broke giving thanks!

In all circumstances - Notice it doesn't say for all circumstances.  Let's face it, not everything is beautiful in this life. Some things really stink!  But, God doesn't require us to give thanks for everything, but he does require us to give thanks in everything.

No matter what!  I am to be thankful.  Giving thanks is sometimes really easy.  It requires no real effort.  Someone did something really nice for you, and you express your thankfulness to them.  That is easy.  But when things are falling apart and you can see no reason whatsoever to give thanks, that's when it is hard.

Nevertheless, God says "Give Thanks"!  That's when you give thanks to an awesome God in spite of your circumstances.  That's the time when giving thanks does the most good for you! When you can look beyond your circumstances and give thanks to a faithful God. When you can express your thankfulness to God in those times, it lifts you up out of your crud & into heavenly places. And that is why the next part is there.

For this is God's will for you in Christ Jesus - Giving thanks is not just a good suggestion, it is God's will for you!  God knows that a person who gives thanks continually will be lifted up. They will not allow their circumstances to drag them down.

When you give thanks to the Lord, he sends you his spirit to minister to you.  He reminds you that he will never leave you or forsake you!  He lets peace start to flow down over your mind and heart. It's God's will because it works wonders in your life.  Here's another scripture.

And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.  Romans 8:28

When you give thanks even in bad circumstances, it becomes easier to give those circumstances to God. When you give them to God and love him through the bad, he works good in you, so that the bad things won't bring destruction to you, but will bring growth & maturity to you and honor & glory to God.

Have a Great Thanksgiving Holiday!  Remember to GIVE Thanks!

The Goodness of God: Assurance of Purpose in the Midst of Suffering

This book is a glimpse of God’s loving ways and higher purposes – which we are sometimes blind to when batting pain and anguish. The author avoids superficial or sentimental responses, and instead presses forward boldly to explore all the troubling doubts and questions that agitate within us when we confront suffering and evil. The issues are far from simple, the answers far from easy—but Alcorn shows how the way of suffering—a path that Jesus himself followed more than anyone else—can ultimately become a journey into wholeness and even logic-defying joy.

God Is Great, God Is Good: Why Believing in God Is Reasonable and Responsible

This book answers the contemporary complaints against belief in God which are addressed with intellectual passion and rigor by some of the most astute theological and philosophical minds in alive today. Atheism is no longer simply about `not believing' in a God or an intelligent designer. They have become angry and intolerant at anyone that believes in God. The evidence of creation and the daily worship of those that love God is a constant grind on the soul of those that reject the reality of God. Just as the scripture tells us, there is no rest for the soul of man that rejects God. Yet Christianity contains all the answers and reveals that God is indeed Good and Great are his works.

What’s So Great About Christianity

This book is a response to the culture and media that continues to lie about Christianity. This is a passionate and intellectual presentation of the strengths and historical truths of Christianity. No other religion has brought the world greater rewards than Christianity, because no other religion contains a greater love given to the world by its creator. Without the unquestionable result Christianity, the world would not have been able to sustain itself and would have already been overtaken by death. We live in a time when atheism is attacking Christianity. This book reminds us that Christianity sustains the world.

Hard To Believe

Popular perception of Jesus Christ is that of a tempered, genteel man who walked the earth, offering nuggets of wisdom to His followers. But what we sometimes fail to recognize is that although Jesus Christ offered a message of forgiveness, He also spoke challenging, demanding words about what being a follower of Christ requires.
