Book Review - Targeting Israel, Caught in the crosshairs of the end times

This is a new book by Tim LaHaye and Ed Hindson.  Targeting Israel looks at the prophecies in both the old and new testimony regarding the nation and land of Israel.

They also address what has been called ‘Replacement Theology’, which is the view that that church has replaced Israel in God’s plan and therefore the prophecies regarding the land of Israel no longer apply.

Chapter 3: The Miracle of Israel’s Existence

This is perhaps the heart of this book.  The details of how Israel became a nation in 1948 are so fascination that only God could have made it happen.  Perhaps best descripted by Isaiah 1:11 – “It shall come to pass in that day that the Lord shell set His hand again the second time to recover the remnant of His people who are left”

This is one of the passages that makes ‘Replacement Theology’ very difficult to work out in scripture.  Tim and Ed explain on page 51.

“People frequently ask us, “Don’t you think Israel could suffer devastation and judgement again and be scattered once more?” Humanly speaking, anything might be possible.  But spiritually speaking, we believe the Bible makes it very clear that once the Jewish people are gathered a second time, they will never be scattered again.  Israel will remain in the land. “

Tim and Ed point to several passages that lead them to this conclusion.

“It is our contention that Israel’s re-establishment as a nation- the valley of bones coming to life- is the greatest sign of our Lord’s imminent return, which could be very close at hand. It is what we call the “supper sign” of the last days.”

Overall, this is a great short book explaining what the scriptures have to say about Israel compared to what is happening today, and what is about to happen next.
